Tempered Glass Mosaics - More info

Level:  Suitable for absolute beginners, but will also be enjoyed by people with mosaic experience but no exposure to this particular technique.

One and a half consecutive days.
Day 1                        9 am – 5 pm  Saturday 12th October
Day 2                         10 am – 1 pm  Sunday 13th October
Tutor: Marian Shapiro
Cost: $120 per person plus materials fee $25

In this workshop, students will use paint, papers and other materials under tempered glass (crash glass), combined with other mosaic materials if desired, to produce unique mosaics suitable for indoor display.   Although basic materials will be provided, participants are encouraged  to bring their own thin, flat, materials to put under the glass, plus any mosaic inclusions they wish to use. No mosaic experience necessary.

The course will start with introductions and expectations, plus an outline of what we will be doing.  A brief visual presentation of both 2-D and 3-D tempered glass mosaics will follow, to give participants ideas and inspiration.  Students will then decorate their mosaic bases and complete them by adding tempered glass.  The short session on day 2 is for grouting and finishing.

Each participant will make a small hanging mosaic (25 c m x 25 cm) suitable for interior display, consisting of a mosaic base decorated with either paint, thin papers, foil, glitter or a mixture and covered with tempered glass.

Basic materials including tempered glass, paint, foils and adhesive will be provided, but participants are encouraged to bring small amounts of additional mosaic material which can be used in with the tempered glass, bearing in mind that tempered glass is usually thicker than materials such as vitreous glass.  Suitable additions could include; glass gems, fused glass inserts, beach glass, ceramic, etc, but they must have a flat back.

Students may also bring any thin, flat paper materials they might wish to put under the glass: printed paper, foils, decorative wrapping paper etc. NB:  anything that is printed must be from a professional printer – items printed on a deskjet printer are not suitable for this method as the glue can cause bleeding of the ink.

Full electronic course notes will be provided.
